Frequently Asked Questions About San Blas Sailing Vacations & Catamaran Trips

What are the San Blas Islands, and why are they the perfect destination for a Panama sailing vacation?

The San Blas Islands are an archipelago of over 300 pristine islands and cays off the Caribbean coast of Panama, governed by the indigenous Guna people. It’s a unique destination known for its untouched natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, vibrant Guna culture, and an authentic off-the-grid experience, perfect for sailing and relaxation away from mass tourism. San Blas is a year-round destination. The dry season (December to April) brings steady winds, lots of sunshine, and ideal sailing conditions. The rainy season (May to November) has fewer tourists, greener islands, calmer seas, and quick afternoon showers with plenty of sun still in the mix. Plus, Panama is below the hurricane belt, so it’s safe to visit any time of year.

You can reach San Blas from Panama City in two ways: by land and boat or by plane.

The most common option is by 4×4 vehicle and speedboat. A driver picks you up early in the morning for a 2.5–3 hour drive through the jungle mountains to the coast, followed by a 30–45 minute boat ride to the islands.

The faster option is a short flight (around 40 minutes) from Albrook Airport to El Porvenir or Corazón de Jesús, where your boat picks you up directly. It’s more expensive but saves time and offers stunning aerial views of the archipelago.

While the boats have plenty of space, the transportation from Panama City to San Blas has strict weight limits. We suggest packing just what you’ll need for the boat trip and leaving the rest at your hotel in Panama City. That said, there can be exceptions—feel free to check with your booking agent if you’re unsure.
